Don started with Thoits Insurance while still a student at Stanford University. Following graduation and service in the Marine Corps, Don rejoined the firm in 1970 and led its transition to a 100% employee owned organization soon thereafter.
Don’s civic service includes the presidency of the Palo Alto Jaycees and eight years as an elected member of Palo Alto’s School Board, including two terms as its president. His industry service includes many years on the boards of the Western Association of Insurance Brokers and the Insurance Brokers and Agents of the West, including service as its president. Don was honored with the Ramsden/Sullivan Memorial Award, the most prestigious award IBA West can bestow.
His other directorships have included Mid-Peninsula Bank and Ironsides Re, Ltd., a Bermuda-based reinsurer.
Don holds the CPCU, CLU, and ARM professional designations, is widely recognized as a student of the industry, and both teaches and testifies as an expert on insurance and brokerage services.
